Polish Harp Society

Polish Harp Society was founded in 2003 in a small town of Cieszyn, which is situated on the southern boarder of Poland and spreads across the Olza river onto the Czech Republic. It was organized for the sole purpose of promoting harp music in Poland through achievements of young harpists that need the support and guidance on their way to successful careers. The Society is printing a bulletin which is issued three times a year and its main goal is to introduce harpists, other musicians and growing circle of harp lovers to the rich world of harp and harpists. The Society is also organizing two important events: the National Competition of Duets with the Harp in Cieszyn and the International Harp Festival in Katowice (which is the brain child of the honorary member of the PHS Prof. Helga Storck – its artistic director ). During the festivals the Society has closely worked with the Academy of Music in Katowice and two orchestras: National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and Silesian Philharmonic. All through the year PHS is monitoring the needs and successes of the Polish harp pupils helping wherever it is possible. In the five years since its conception Polish Harp Society has gained the support of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the support of the local governments of the region of Silesia and towns such as Katowice, Bielsko-Biała and Cieszyn. Another area of our endeavours is enlarging the harp literature through commissions from Polish composers : (Elżbieta Sikora, Jarosław Chełmecki) or friendly requests (Marta Ptaszyńska, Andrzej Makal).
The official publication of PHS is the Bulletin which comes out three times a year thanks to our sponsors and friends (mainly Lyon & Healy, Camac, Salvi) and reaches not only our members world wide but all the music institutions – academies, schools, orchestras, theatres and libraries in Poland.
